Description

Once thought to be a rare psychiatric illness, obsessive-compulsive disorder is now recognized to be quite common as 2-3 million Americans are believed to have it. Although they are not as well-known as OCD, several other disorders share significant characteristics with it and are now considered to be part of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum. These include body dysmorphic disorder, illness anxiety disorder, hoarding disorder, trichotillomania, and excoriation disorder.

The primary purpose of this workshop is to familiarize attendees with the various diagnoses on the spectrum, to review cognitive and behavioral manifestations of each, and to thoroughly explore evidence-based treatment approaches.

At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to:

  1. Assess for the presence of these disorders by developing a thorough understanding of the DSM-V diagnostic criteria for each.
  2. Identify cognitive and behavioral manifestations for each disorder.
  3. Describe rationale for including most of these disorders in the DSM V classification of OCD and Related Disorders.
  4. Utilize treatment strategies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, exposure and response prevention therapy and habit reversal training. Participants will also become familiarized with medications most commonly used to treat these disorders.
