Description

As the social work landscape continues to evolve, so does the field supervision needs of students. As field supervision is one of the most important aspects of supporting students’ ability to connect theory with practice, this 3-hour advanced training workshop will build on the initial field instructor training, from the Autumn Quarter, on utilizing the Multidimensional Ecological Comparative Approach (MECA) to support field instructors in helping students attune to diverse cultural presentations in context with their field placement role. Please Note: you do not need to have attended the field kickoff presentation in order to attend this workshop.

Celia Falicov’s Multidimensional Ecological Comparative Approach (MECA) was developed to provide a framework of supervision and clinical intervention to social work practitioners who are increasingly called to provide care to a wider and more culturally diverse range of clients. MECA also presents an approach that provides context to the increasing recognition that the encounter between practitioners and clients is a cultural and sociopolitical encounter.

MECA is a systems-oriented postmodern framework designed to provide a culturally attuned and socially empowering approach in family therapy theory, research, clinical practice, and training (Falicov 1995, 2014, 2016).

This workshop will provide the opportunity for field instructors of students at the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy and Practice to bring challenges from their field instructor experiences related to supporting students in engaging in culturally attuned practice with their assigned client population and roles.

By the end of the workshop, field instructors who provide both clinical and social administration supervision to Crown Students should be able to apply the following frameworks:

  • Have a clear understanding of the MECA framework and its applications in the field instructor environment.
  • Apply the MECA framework as a supervisory tool to better assess student learning needs/requests from the perspective of cultural attunement and intersectionality.
  • Apply concepts from the Multidimensional Ecological Comparative Approach (MECA) in the supervisory relationship with the goal of enhancing culturally attuned client interventions.
  • Field instructors will have an additional tool for examining their own supervisory approaches and consider if MECA is an additional approach that will enhance field supervision.
