Field Education is central to the teaching of professional social work competencies and facilitating connections between theory and practice. The process of educating social work students in the field is complex, rewarding, and involves a unique set of skills and responsibilities.
For social workers and students who provide clinical and administrative support to vulnerable populations and navigate complex systems of care, maintaining personal and professional self-care is imperative in supporting long-term professional sustainability. In the context of macro-level changes, decreases in resources and funding, and the complexity of human experience, this mandate of self-care can feel overwhelming, resulting in social work compassion fatigue and burnout. When a social worker is operating in survival mode, their ability to engage in care of others is impacted.
This training will provide a more nuanced understanding of the complexity of self-care utilizing a framework by Deanna Zandt (2019) while also allowing for the opportunity to consider and create individual self-care action plans considering six domains of self-care.
