Strong and effective supervision is a critical component in ensuring a positive impact on the individuals and communities we serve. Today’s service providers face complex work, multiple distractions, competing priorities, and the emotional impact of working in a helping profession. As supervisors, how can we best guide and assist our staff to be successful? This workshop aims to provide those with supervisory responsibilities with important tools to help staff perform well and achieve strong outcomes. These tools include developing a supervisory relationship marked by accountability, trust, and safety, and using reflective supervision and practice.
Reflective supervision is a relationship-based, collaborative approach in which staff can reflect on and learn from their work. The relationship contains elements of safety and mutual respect, which model the desired working relationship of those we serve. In this case, reflection involves paying deliberate attention to our work and interpersonal experiences and making a commitment to plan and implement the resulting strategies.
Workshop learning will occur through a combination of facilitator instruction (based on professional experience and best-practice resources), a video featuring a case vignette, and small- and large-group discussions. Participants will have opportunities to explore their own supervisory experiences as they relate to the topics discussed.
